Blessed Are The Children in Thy Tender Care

As you know, LEAP has announced plans to help build a new Pediatric Ward at our host hospital, Hôpital Espoir, in Port-au-Prince. With the help of our incredible volunteers Pat and Janet Ortega, the planning phases of the ward are complete, a volunteer team of professional trades is assembled, and after two trips already to Haiti, supplies are sourced and partially purchased. The hospital has already been working hard to prepare the space. Our construction team, led by Pat and Janet, will travel to Haiti in September to spend 16 days completing the Pediatric Ward.

This Pediatric Ward will add an additional 2,000 square feet to the hospital, which will include one nursing station, nine pediatric patient rooms, seven restrooms with showers, and a waiting area. The estimated cost per room is approximately $6,500.00 with a restroom and much needed air conditioning. If there is an interest in donating a room on the Pediatric Ward, a plaque honoring the donor can be provided in recognition of their generous donation.

We are continuing efforts to raise monies to meet the $50,000 budget that will fund this project. You can donate online at and designate to the Haiti Hospital campaign. Please consider helping us provide an eternal gift of restoring health to the beautiful children of Haiti.Pedi Ward Construction5

How Gentle Like a Spirit

By | Belize, Blog, LEAP Stories, News, Volunteers | No Comments

screen-shot-2016-11-21-at-3-36-36-pmBelize was my promise to God to pay it forward, and it was truly a leap of faith! Not knowing a single person on the team, I had faith The Lord had brought me to LEAP with gifts to share. My hope was to bring blessings to others and what I received was so much more!

I prayed to bring hope to the children of Belize. Their warm smiles and patient gratefulness of the local people actually brought reassurance of the human spirit to me. I had hoped to bring a strong work ethic to the team, and this wonderful team showed me exactly what it means to give tirelessly in the spirit of love for other human beings. I had hoped to bring the gifts of my experience and education to better the lives of the people of Belize, but it was the simple sense of friendship and community that has completely blessed my life.

Early mornings, hard work, late nights, and lots of sweat has been God’s way of teaching me humility and grace, but greatest of all is how simply loving one another can change lives! Thank you, Belize!

Amazing Gladys

10455268_10152568097142254_3523456791491774029_nAmongst dozens of patients in a hospital waiting room, eight-year-old Gladys patiently waited her turn with a captivating smile and an engaging personality. As an infant, she had surgery to repair a cleft lip and palate but now came to see the LEAP team because of difficulty breathing through her nose.

When surgeons removed old scar tissue, they discovered her original surgery had been poorly executed, resulting in her inability to breathe properly. Instead of managing her current condition, the LEAP team took the extra time to reconstruct her nose and palate to ensure that Gladys would not be held back again! And who could hold back an eight-year-old girl who loves animals, dolls, the color purple, AND wants to be a nurse when she grows up? We look forward to watching you soar, Gladys!
