Misha Update

By | Blog, Landmark Program, News | No Comments

photoLandmark recipient Misha continues to do well post-operatively with weekly visits for saline injections in his tissue expanders. This will help stretch the tissue and prepare him for his next surgery, tentatively scheduled for early July. We are so grateful to the wonderful Doroshchuk family (pictured), who have four children of their own and has graciously opened up their home and loved this family well.

Ely - May 2016As you know, LEAP is blessed to have the great honor of helping children with complex craniofacial problems through our Landmark Program. We have helped over 40 children from around the world through this program, bringing them to Dallas for free surgical care that often requires the generous hearts of our LEAP family and community partners to help these patients and their families while living here.

In January 2015, three-year-old Ely arrived in Dallas from Cuba with her parents and older sister. Ely first underwent extensive craniofacial surgery in March at Medical City Children’s Hospital with two subsequent eye surgeries thereafter by Dr. David Stager, Jr.. We continue to follow Ely and evaluate her for future surgical needs. Ely is happy, doing well in preschool, and thanks to her medical and surgical care, is able to see more clearly and learn faster than before. After her most recent medical exam, Ely then proclaimed that Dr. Hobar is her most favorite doctor EVER! We are continually blessed by this family and the opportunity to benefit other children who live in all parts of the world by providing free specialized surgical care to those in need.

Zimbabwe Team Nurses

Zimbabwe_09.2011_team28LEAP’s mission trip to Zimbabwe is just around the corner! Our nurse leadership team includes Circulator Co-Leads Sarah Roffler, RN and John Faulkner, RN (pictured right) and Recovery Lead Erika Grimes, RN. This will be Sarah and Erika’s first mission to Zimbabwe; both have previously traveled with LEAP to Haiti and India. John has been a part of our Belize mission team and will be traveling with us to Zimbabwe for the fourth time. These wonderful nurses will work together to provide exceptional leadership and nursing care for our patients.

We are particularly thankful to our nurse leads who prepare and pack medical supplies to travel with our team. This allows us to be best prepared in the mission field and is a critical element to the overall team.

We are thankful to these humanitarian nurses and to our other medical/non-medical volunteers who give their time and talents to selflessly serve these children in need. Since 2009, LEAP has traveled annually to Harare to provide hope, help and healing to the beautiful children of Zimbabwe. We are blessed by our wonderful local partners who work tirelessly to help facilitate our mission of service.

Leading our anesthesia team is pediatric anesthesiologist Dr. Elizabeth Richards (Brisbane, Australia; pictured left). This will be her fourth LEAP mission. Dr. Richards will work together with newcomer Dr. Roger Fons (Milwaukee) and seasoned LEAPer Phuong Luong (Dallas) to provide exceptional anesthesia care to the children of Harare. This will be Phuong’s 16th trip with LEAP!

We are particularly thankful to Phuong for leading anesthesia supply packing at our warehouse. This allows us to be best prepared in the mission field and is a critical element to the overall team. To each of these humanitarian anesthesia providers and to our other medical volunteers who give their time and talents to selflessly serve these children in need, we are most grateful.

Landmark Recipient: Misha

By | Blog, Landmark Program, LEAP Stories, News | No Comments

Misha&SilviaMany of you have been following the story of Misha, our nearly 3-year-old Landmark recipient who is visiting Dallas for the next few months to have craniofacial surgical care. Misha is from Moldova, a tiny country near Ukraine that is one of the poorest in the EU. Misha, his mother, and two older sisters (ages 6 and 8) have few possessions and live in a very humble home without electricity or plumbing. They arrived with simply the clothes on their backs and a small bag. We would like to take Misha and his mother Silvia shopping soon and again before they return home. We would appreciate your help by providing donations of cash or gift cards. If you’re interested in helping this family, you may donate online to the Landmark Program, contact Ashley at ashley@leapmissions.org, or call the LEAP office at (972) 566-6550.
